Have you ever wondered if there was a DIY product that could hydrate, fade pigmentation, boost collagen and improve skin texture? You’re in luck because there is an easy to make product that with regular use can do all those things! Today, let’s breakdown the vitamin C serum benefits you can reap without breaking the bank or compromising your natural values!
What is a Vitamin C Serum?
A vitamin C serum is made up of a water based ingredient such as water, hydrosol, Aloe Vera Gel or witch hazel. You simply add a vitamin C powder to it and VOILA, you have made a vitamin C serum. You can adjust the amount of vitamin C to change the strength of your serum depending on your skin type and increase the vitamin C powder as you get used to it.
Vitamin C has been proven to be safe when used for a prolonged amount of time which makes it an excellent anti aging ingredient!
The problem with vitamin C serums (over the counter and DIY) is that vitamin C is very unstable. Once it is added to a liquid it becomes ineffective or oxidizes within about a week. This has proven to be tricky when it comes to reaping the full benefits of this potent antioxidant.
Some skin care companies boast a stable vitamin C serum. However, I have not found a way to DIY a stable vitamin C serum. You might be thinking you’d just rather buy a stable serum but not so fast! The DIY version is actually the BEST way to get the freshest and most effective serum as long as you commit to weekly serum DIYs. You have total control of the ingredients and freshness. Not to mention, you will save so much money making your own DIY Vitamin C serum.
However, there is an easier way to include fresh vitamin C to your skin care routine rather than making a serum weekly!

The BEST Vitamin C Powder:
I have used several different vitamin C powders. I’ve landed on THIS powder. It dissolves quickly and comes with a huge amount of raving reviews! It’s also very affordable. Bos Essential’s vitamin C contains no fillers, additives or additional ingredients. It is lab tested for purity and guaranteed bacteria free.
I recommend adding ferulic acid to your serum as well because it is also an incredible anti aging tool and also helps stabilize your vitamin C powder.
I like to add both powders to Aloe Vera and typically use a dark 1/2 ounce dropper bottle. I apply a generous amount to my face, hands and chest and make sure I finish the bottle in a week.

How to Properly Use a Vitamin C Serum:
Should you use vitamin C everyday? ABSOLUTELY!!!
Since vitamin C can help protect your skin from pollution and sun damage, it is best to use it in the morning. However, you can also use it at night as well.
If you are pairing your vitamin C serum with a retinol treatment, I suggest using vitamin C in the AM and retinol in the PM.
I once heard a skin care specialist say to use the thinnest product first and increase thickness as you go. For example, a toner is like water, a serum should be pretty thin as well but typically is a thin gel. A face oil or moisturizer is a thicker product and should be use after a serum. Finish your routine with an eye serum and sunscreen.
If you enjoy a hyaluronic acid serum, you can layer your vitamin C and hyaluronic acid serums! Remember, use the thinnest serum first. Soon I will post a recipe where we make 1 serum that contains both hyaluronic acid and vitamin C! I’m still working on that one!
If you prefer not to DIY a vitamin C serum, I recommend you try 100 Percent Pure’s vitamin C serum or Hynt Beauty’s Ester C serum.
I hope I’ve convinced you of all the vitamin C serum benefits! Vitamin C is truly and amazing ingredient that every skin type can use. Plus, while it will take some time to see tightening and reduced hyperpigmentation, you will enjoy immediate skin smoothing and brightening after 1-4 applications!
