DIY Lip Mask Recipe-The Natural Laneige Dupe!

Sharing is caring!

This DIY lip mask recipe is a nearly identical dupe of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. However, this recipe contains only natural ingredients you can feel good about slathering on dry lips! This homemade lip mask is a star when it comes to all my lip care products. It’s quickly become one of my favorite lip care recipes. It is full of fatty acids, natural waxes, natural oils and shea butter. Using this DIY hydrating lip mask will give you luscious lips, naturally!

My daughters “scored” 3 pots of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask for b-days and Christmas in the last few months. This lip balm is not on my approved beauty products list-not even close. However, with 2 teenage girls, I pick my battles. My girls were so excited to have these lip masks and I’ve got bigger battles to fight than toxic lip balms-lol! This did give me a chance to really experience this viral mask for myself. I was able to feel the texture of the balm, to smell it and to feel it on my lips as well as determine how long it lasted.

I have scoured Pinterest and Google for DIY lip mask recipes. I made at least 5 DIY lip masks all of which did not compare to the Laneige Lip Mask. I originally added lanolin which is a fabulous ingredient to heal and moisten skin but it has quite a smell. I ended up loving working with it in balms but not loving it as a lip product. I tried using soy lecithin and that made a nice lip product that I will most likely share but that balm was not similar to Laneige. Finally, after many tries I landed on a recipe that is, in my opinion, perfect!

My homemade lip mask recipe was hard to formulate but is easy to make!

What is Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask?

The Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is a Korean lip product that went viral. It is basically a well marketed lip balm. It comes in a glass pot and looks just like a typical balm we could easily make. However, there is an extra shine to it than a DIY balm. It costs a whopping $24 for .70 ounces. It is meant to be applied to the lips before bed and then slept in. It comes in 4 different flavors that have different colors but is not sweet to the taste and the balm doesn’t give any color.

According to Laneige it is a “hydrating, intensive-care mask for lips. With nourishing Berry Fruit Complex, Murumuru Seed and Shea butter, it delivers intense, lasting moisture and antioxidants overnight for visibly smoother, baby-soft lips in the AM.”

Lip Sleep Mask Ingredient List:

DIISOSTEARYL MALATE, HYDROGENATED POLYISOBUTENE, PHYTOSTERYL/ISOSTEARYL/CETYL/STEARYL/BEHENYL DIMER DILINOLEATE, POLYBUTENE, HYDROGENATED POLY(C6-14 OLEFIN), MICROCRYSTALLINE WAX / CERA MICROCRISTALLINA / CIRE MICROCRISTALLINE, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER, SYNTHETIC WAX, ETHYLENE/PROPYLENE/STYRENE COPOLYMER, SUCROSE TETRASTEARATE TRIACETATE, MICA, EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX / CANDELILLA CERA HYDROCARBONS / CIRE DE CANDELILLA, CANDELILLA WAX ESTERS, FRAGRANCE / PARFUM, ASTROCARYUM MURUMURU SEED BUTTER, GLYCERYL CAPRYLATE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), BUTYLENE/ETHYLENE/STYRENE COPOLYMER, POLYGLYCERYL-2 DIISOSTEARATE, COPERNICIA CERIFERA (CARNAUBA) WAX / COPERNICIA CE RIFERA CERA / CIRE DE CARNAUBA, METHICONE, COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL, PENTAE RYTHRITYL TETRA-DI-T-BUTYL HYDROXYHYDROCINNAMATE, POLYGLYCERYL-2 TRIISOSTEARATE, YELLOW 5 LAKE (CI 19140), ASCORBIC ACID, WATER / AQUA / EAU, GLYCERIN, PROPANEDIOL, BHT, PUNICA GRANATUM FRUIT JUICE, RUBUS IDAEUS (RASPBERRY) JUICE, VITIS VINIFERA (GRAPE) JUICE

The lip mask went viral on TikTok in 2022 thanks to Kate Moss sharing it in a “Beauty Secrets” video on Vogue and I’ve continue to hear about it ever since.

As fellow natural beauty lovers and DIYers, you’ll probably notice the large amount of non-natural ingredients. Yikes! I’ve cleared these ingredients with EWG and most of them are scoring a 1 but EWG indicates “limited data” on many of the ingredients scoring a 1 so the jury’s out. The overall score of Laneige Lip Mask is a 6 (10 being the worst) mainly due to fragrance and coloring.

How To Naturally Remake Laneige Lip Mask:

I basically threw out the ingredient list and focused on texture. Using natural oils, butters and waxes is incredibly nourishing and effective when it comes to lips. The key with a really hydrating lip balm is it’s texture. Getting the texture thick enough to have staying power and lock moisture in by creating a substantial barrier is key.

The other tricky part of remaking the lip mask is the shine. I already knew castor oil is a sticky, thick and shiny oil so it had to be included but it wasn’t enough. While researching, I discovered a wax called Cera Bellina. Cera Bellina looks identical to white beeswax and acts to thicken up oils but it’s super-power is turning oils into gels or ointments. It creates a shiny balm! Ding, ding, ding! It is the perfect ingredient for making an overnight lip mask.

The Laneige Lip Mask is right in between a hard and soft balm. It looks like a solid balm but you can press your finger into it without pushing terribly hard. This can be hard to achieve. My balm might be a tad harder than the original but it does not lose it’s silky shine and in some of the pictures, you can see what it looks like when you “agitate” the balm meaning I took a popsicle stick and scrape and mix the balm. It turns into a gorgeous, silky cream when mixed!

As far as flavoring, I decided to stick with the fun flavors the original lip mask offers and like with my DIY Bubblegum Lip Oil, I used a natural candy flavoring which I believe is much safer than fragrance. This isn’t necessary and good ole’ peppermint essential oil is a great way to flavor this lip balm.

If you’d like to color your balm, I always recommend a small sliver of lipstick. You won’t run into any preservation issues using lipstick and it only takes a tiny bit to give a hint of color to your balm. Other options are mica powder if you have some on hand. A little goes a long way.

The original lip mask contains Vitamin C, a popular ingredient used for its antioxidant properties. Instead of incorporating vitamin C, I added Vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant ingredient that will deliver free radical fighting action as well as help to preserve your balm for longer. And again, you won’t run into preservation issues with Vitamin E.

DIY Lip Mask Recipe

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

If you looking to remake the viral Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask with non-toxic, natural ingredients this recipe is for you! The texture, is perfection and the nourishing power of oils, butters and waxes will have your lips feeling smooth, supple and hydrated!

Materials

  • 2 tsp. Castor Oil
  • 2 tsp. Jojoba Oil
  • 2 tsp. Shea Butter
  • 1.5 tsp. Cera Bellina
  • .5 tsp. Beeswax
  • .5 tsp. Vitamin E Oil
  • 5-10 drops of Flavoring *optional

Tools

  • 1-1.5 oz jar or tin
  • Medium size pot
  • Glass Pyrex measuring cup
  • Stir stick or spoon
  • Teaspoons

Instructions

    1. Fill a medium size pot half way full with water.
    2. Place the glass Pyrex cup into the water.
    3. Turn the stove top to medium.
    4. Add all your ingredients to the glass cup.
    5. Allow to thoroughly melt.
    6. Stir well.
    7. Remove from heat and pour into containers.
    8. Allow to thoroughly cool before use.

Notes

  • This recipe makes a little over 1 ounce.
  • If you opt to add flavoring, note that each flavor has it's own strength. For example, I find that marshmallow, bubblegum, cotton candy and tutti frutti all seem to be much more subtle. Cherry is the only fruit I've used and I find it to be much stronger. Once your balm has cooled and you've been using it, you can always remelt it like we did when making it and add more flavor or you can "agitate" the balm making it more of a creamy consistency and add more that way.
  • I question whether .5 tsp. of beeswax is totally necessary. The Cera Bellina thickens oils on it's own and you may be able to nix the beeswax and do 2 tsp. of the Cera Bellina. I haven't thoroughly experimented with this ingredient yet to know how it performs without beeswax. Also, beeswax adds barrier protection to your balm which is really important for a sleep lip mask.
  • Jojoba oil is a pretty common ingredient and a great carrier oil to have on hand but feel free to use any odorless oil you already have such as grapeseed oil or almond oil. Olive oil may not be the best if it has a strong scent.
  • I chose shea butter because it is a soft butter. Cocoa butter, mango butter and kokum butter are all very hard and made this balm's texture difficult to scoop.

Benefits of Using an Overnight Lip Treatments:

The benefits of using a lip mask is to increase skin elasticity, smooth lips, trap moisture to restore moisture loss, soothe dry skin and decrease lip lines and the appearance of wrinkles. Using a lip mask helps to fight dryness that typically happens during cold winter weather.

How to Use a DIY Lip Mask:

Using a lip sleep mask is simple. Use it as you would a lip balm. You may want to apply a thicker layer than you typically would if you are using it overnight. I use this DIY lip mask all day. I love the way it looks on the lips and during the winter a barrier on the lips while experience dry temps from heaters is a good idea.

  1. Apply a generous amount over the entire mouth.
  2. Sleep in the lip mask.
  3. Remove any remaining mask in the morning.

*For best results use a gentle exfoliant before applying a lip mask. You can make a homemade lip scrub using a pinch of white sugar or brown sugar and adding a little oil like coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, jojoba oil or grapeseed! You can also brush your lips gently with a toothbrush to help remove dead, flaky skin.

I kept coming up with balms that were too hard and not silky enough. But with a little time and a lot of wasted balms I came up with a DIY sleeping lip mask you’re going to love! I can guarantee you’ll experience supple lips when using this extremely protective lip balm!

  1. Have you seen the Lange dupe from Trader Joe’s? Not sure of the ingredients but I saw it the last time I stopped in at the store. It was $6. I got it for my 13 year old as she has to use products like mine (I try to make my own for my uber sensitive mature skin). I tried it and it is pretty nice plus has a vanilla flavor. A little truly goes a long way! When she runs out I’ll try your recipe.

    1. Angela-I don’t do that method for my recipes however lately I see the value of it. I may in the future convert my recipes but at this point I’ve not done it. I keep my recipes simple though and most of them don’t have to be exact so weighing isn’t 100% necessary.

  2. I read up on the Cera Bellina, and although it looks like it may be ok, I really don’t like using super ‘refined’ products. I have a guide regarding using beeswax for salves and the ratios for hard/medium/soft. I think I’ll just make it using the soft ratio instead of using the Cera Bellina…I don’t care that it resembles the Lange at all, just that it does a great job of being a lip moisturizer and conditioner. I have T2Diabetes, and therefore am super dehydrated at all times, and if I don’t drink a HUGE amount of water, my lips begin peeling immediately. Hopefully, this will help my lips stay hydrated.
I MIGHT try the dupe from Trader Joes mentioned in the comments. (depending on the ingredients)

    1. Cera Bellina isn’t a typical product I’d use but I really wanted to experiment with it and love the texture it gives. I don’t think it does much for conditioning and hydrating the lips and it certainly isn’t as moisturizing as beeswax so omitting it won’t take away from the nourishment of this recipe. If I were you, I’d up the shea butter for more moisture!

  3. Hi Jenni,
I would love to try this recipe, however, I was hoping you could provide the ingredients in weight instead of volume. Weight is more accurate (how can you get an accurate teaspoon of lumpy beeswax?) and works the best in terms of being able to recreate the formula with consistency.
Even if you could just add weight as an option next to the volume amounts, it would be greatly appreciated. I understand not everyone owns a scale, but to make a consistent, quality product, it’s absolutely required. Providing two options for ingredient measurements will help both the casual hobbyists and also those who take formulating more seriously.
    With kindness and regards,
    Caroline

  4. I made this and it turned out very hard. I’m wondering if this might be because I tried using my own beeswax, from our hives? I had to try to convert the amount from tsp to grams. Maybe I ended up with too much??? Gram weights in your recipe would be nice.
