I think all of us know someone struggling with thinning hair or baldness.  Upon doing research for my latest recipe, my new & improved brow serum, I realized there were so many natural oils that had hair re-growth capabilities.  I personally am not experiencing thinning hair but I can only imagine how disheartening it is and how a natural solution would be so amazing.  I do remember with each pregnancy, I experienced a huge amount of postpartum hair loss.  This info. would have been so helpful back then!  I wanted to compile a list of all the oils I’ve learned about as well as give you my formulation for re-growth.

First, let me list some causes of hair growth.  If we don’t identify and treat the original cause, the chances of prolonged re-growth are greatly reduced.

  • Emotional stress
  • Physical stress
  • Postpartum
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Thyroid issues
  • Exposure to toxins
  • Vitamin & mineral deficiencies
  • Allergies
  • Heredity

7 Oils PROVEN to Help with Hair Loss

Black Cumin Seed Oil Not only does this oil strengthen hair, it addresses hair loss. No one quite understands why it happens, but it most likely has something to do with its powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.  Strengthening hair follicles will in turn cause healthier hair growth.  There have been MANY studies showing just how effective this oil has been.

Castor Oil is probably the most well-known and most-used oil when it comes to regrowing hair.  Because of castor oil’s high concentration of ricinoleic acid, it is great for increasing circulation. By massaging it into the scalp, increased blood flow will occur, insuring delivery of nutrients to hair follicles. The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger and smoother.

Cedarwood Essential Oil is an extremely important ingredient when re-growing hair.  Study after study prove cedarwood oil (usually mixed with jojoba oil) is very effective when it comes to re-growing hair.  The results of the 100’s of studies show cedarwood is a great remedy to add to our serum!

Rosemary Essential Oil-Rosemary stimulate circulations which in turn wakes up hair follicles.  Circulation is key when it comes to hair growth.  Rosemary also increases cellular metabolism.

Hazelnut oil is full of fatty acids, proteins, and vitamins, which can nourish your hair along with the scalp. It is a great oil for maintaining good hair growth and ideal for stimulating the hair follicles and nourishing them to alleviate dry scalp.  As a side note, hazelnut oil is also great at preserving your hair color.

Clary Sage Essential Oil is very stimulating to hair follicles, encouraging hair growth.  It also helps balance scalp oils.  I’m not sure if it can help balance hormones by applying to your scalp, but it is known as the most effective essential oil for regulating hormones!

Jojoba Oil is said to stimulate hair growth. Jojoba also cleanses the scalp of excess sebum build-up which can clog hair follicles.  Also,  jojoba oil stimulates circulation on your scalp, bringing blood flow to your hair follicles and encouraging growth.

I used a 4 ounce dropper bottle for this recipe.  You can find one HERE.  Also, a small funnel is helpful.  If you’d like, you could easily cut this recipe in half.

DIY Hair Re-Growth Serum

DIY Hair Growth Serum

3 TBSP. Black Cumin Seed Oil (find it HERE)

1 TBSP. Hazelnut Oil (find it HERE)

2 TBSP. Castor Oil (find it HERE)

1.5 TBSP. Jojoba Oil (find it HERE)

30 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil (find it HERE)

20 drops Rosemary Essential Oil (find it HERE)

10 drops Lavender Essential Oil (find it HERE)

How to Use:

  • In order to get the most out of this serum, it must be massaged into the scalp and left on for a period of time.
  • I suggest using 10 drops in the palm of your hand, then massaging all over the scalp, paying closer attention to thinner areas.
  • Massage as long as you have time because massage also promotes blood flow.
  • Leave the oil treatment on your scalp for at least 15 minutes.
  • After the oil has set on the scalp, shampoo your hair.  *If shampoo is not removing the oils enough, massage conditioner into your scalp before you get into the shower.
  • I personally suggest using this serum before bed and leaving it on all night.  This will encourage the oils to penetrate deeper and more thoroughly.  Plus, shampooing out in the morning will be more effective.
  • Use once daily for at least 3 mos.  Results vary from person to person.

If you’re experiencing thinning hair, I really encourage you to try this recipe out.  I couldn’t get over all the studies where people were using castor oil, cedar wood essential oil or black cumin seed oil or a placebo.  The results varied but the people using the oils experienced 50-90% re-growth and thicker hair while the people taking the placebos experienced 15% and below.

Of course, you must choose high quality oils in order to create an effective DIY.  I got all my oils from Mountain Rose Herbs.  While it might be pricey up front, if this works-it’s so worth it.  If it’s not effective for you, all these oils can be used in plenty other amazing DIYs!  Plus, these oils are very healthy for your whole head of hair.  Your hair from root to tip can benefit from the conditioning and strengthening qualities of this recipe.

    I was looking at this again and noticed you mention clary sage in the article but you didn’t mention it in the recipe. Is this correct?

      Kerry-Yes, I actually hate the smell of clary sage so I nixed it. I believe what I did add is effective enough but if you’d like to add it, I would smell it first then add anywhere from 3-10 drops.

    Hi there. I was wondering if I could somehow doctor this recipe (perhaps with less essential oils) for my eye lashes. I’m 8 weeks postpartum and with both of my babies I lost a lot of the thickness and length of my lashes. Thank you!

      Hi Cassandra-I’m not sure because some people can take essential oils around the eyes without any irritation. I am not one of them so I have no idea how much to say. I do have a lash serum recipe HERE though!

    Hi Jenni

    I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and have thinning hair. There is a lot of breakage due to dryness. I hydrate a lot and supplement with omega 3. Is there a DIY serum that I could put into my hair and use it as a leave-in? Any help would be appreciated!
