What is an Apple Cider Vinegar Drink?
An apple cider vinegar drink is a beverage that contains apple cider vinegar and water. It can contain other natural ingredients such as raw honey and fresh lemon juice. However, it can be as simple as a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a glass of water.
The drink can be hot or cold and is recommended to be consumed before a meal on an empty stomach in order to help digestion.
What is Apple Cider Vinegar?
Organic apple cider vinegar is a type of vinegar that is made by crushing apples and exposing them to yeast which eventually ferments the sugar from the apples and turns them into alcohol.
Bacteria is added next which further continues the fermentation process. Once the bacteria ferments the alcohol, acetic acid is formed which is responsible for all the beneficial effects of apple cider vinegar.
Organic, unfiltered acv also contains “the mother” which consists of strands of enzymes, protein and good bacteria.
What Type and Brand of ACV Should You Drink?
I always use Braggs’s ACV because they have organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar that has “the mother” still in it. Plus, Braggs is very easy to find.
Words to look for when choosing ACV are “unfiltered“, “organic” and “raw“. You also want to make sure it contains “the mother“.
Apple cider vinegar does not contain many vitamins or minerals but it does contain potassium which can be helpful to those of us who have low potassium levels.
ACV can be found in just about every grocery store and is very affordable! You can also find it on Amazon HERE.

My Experience w/ Apple Cider Vinegar:
Apple Cider Vinegar has become a part of my healthy lifestyle just recently.
I have recently discovered that I am having blood sugar issues which have manifested itself in my arms falling asleep at night, low energy, obvious blood sugar spikes and weight gain.
I am taking 1 tbsp. of ACV in a glass of water before lunch and dinner. This has helped so much. I’m watching my sugars and have cut out alcohol. I have seen so much improvement in the way I feel and really improved my digestion.
This apple cider vinegar drink recipe is so yummy and when I make the time, I love to drink it-it’s definitely much tastier than my simple version.
Making my recipe has helped with extra hormone support as well and I believe it has made allergy season a bit more bearable!
Potential Side Effects:
It’s a good idea to steer very clear from apple cider vinegar shots. ACV is way too acidic to be taken without diluting it first. I recommend adding at least 8 ounces of water per 1 tablespoon of ACV.
Also, be sure to drink your apple cider vinegar drink with a straw because it could damage tooth enamel when ingested on a daily basis.
It is recommended that you consult your doctor if you have kidney disease or any type of kidney problems.
As you can see, the benefits of an apple cider vinegar daily detox drink are countless!
I will say apple cider vinegar and water is a tough swallow but many apple cider vinegar recipes contain ingredients like apple juice, citrus juices, maple syrup/honey and/or liquid stevia which help to make it much more palatable. My recipe contains minimal sugar because I don’t want to defeat the purpose of what we are drinking apple cider vinegar for! I find my recipe incredibly refreshing and I crave it!
I believe one of the best things you can do for your health is get a daily dose of apple cider vinegar!
xx, Jenni
Hi Jenni, I think you meant to say it is a bit of an acquired taste, not required. Looking forward to trying this as I have heard alot about the benefits of ACV.
Thanks for the recipe. I love the information you provide on essential oils and their benefits and have started making my own serums.
Jeanne-LOL-thanks-I’ll fix that! Thanks!!
Do you think it would last a few days if it were in the fridge?
Lauren, I’m not sure, I think it would but you really want to mix it up daily because you lose potency if it sets over a period of time. Thanks!
I don’t have maca root powder. Is there something else I could substitute?
Nicole-You could just omit it. It doesn’t add any taste-I just need hormone support so I add it to mine! Thanks!
I was worried about the vinegar destroying the maca. I can’t seem to find any information on it, but I was hoping you could share your experience with me. Have you found that the vinegar alters or interferes with the effects of the maca? Thanks.
Rachel-I’ve never noticed that maca did much for me that I could notice. It just has so many benefits that I always like to add it to my diet. I have never thought about the vinegar interfering with it and in my logic, I wouldn’t think it would but I could be wrong!
Thanks for the response! I looked into it a bit more last night. I discovered that vinegar has similar pH to stomach acid, so it should not interfere with nutrient absorption (at least for water-soluble compounds like maca). I’m just not well-versed enough in biology or nutrition to understand some of the processes that take place in the body, thus my concern.
Until I get some lemon oil what about using lemon juice?
Martha-Yes that would be fine!
I would suggest if using the lemon EO that you use one that is edible, like Zongle Organic Lemon Essential Oil. I make my own toothpaste and use the Zongle Organic Peppermint EO. I don’t have any issues if it is swallowed by anyone, children alike.
Jennifer, I absolute love your recipes and this is the only one I have ever seen that made me question an ingredient. So this is just a suggestion since you are so careful about what you make and blog about. 💛💛
Mary-Thank you!! I appreciate your suggestion! I wonder what makes Zongle’s e.o. different? I’ll have to look into it.
Just wondering if the ACV is ok for the teeth? I used to drink it every day mixed with watered down pure cranberry juice. It truly is addicting after awhile but I stopped because I thought it may hurt the enamel?
Any thoughts?
Cheers
Ashley Starr
Ashley-I have heard that ACV can degrade enamel. I haven’t done much research on it, but I drink it daily as well. I’m hoping that since it’s so watered down and doesn’t linger on the teeth that we’re ok!

Can you drink it warm?
Deedra-Absolutely! It’s really good warm and the honey melts much faster! I just like mine iced!
How often can you drink this elixir per day? Can you use real lemon juice instead of essential oils?
Dawn-I would only drink it once. It can be quite acidic to the throat. I don’t have an issue daily but more than that, I think it might burn going down! Thanks!
Jennie can you use lemongrass oil?
Bonnie-I wouldn’t-lemongrass and lemon are very different. I think lemongrass would taste really gross-It’s not one I would want to ingest. Lemon essential oil literally tastes like a lemon. What you could do is just use fresh lemon. That would be even better because you would be getting vitamin C in your drink as well!
All your recipes are so amazing!
Doni-Thank you so much!
Hi Jenni ! Your recipes are so amazing ! I love them ! Concerning the detox drink, can you please tell us for what quantity is it ? If there’s 2 tbsp ACV, then it should be for more than 9 oz?
Emily-Thank you so much! I would definitely say at least 8 oz. It’s really up to you how much water you want to add. My glass I use is 10 oz. but I’m used to ACV.
